Poor Posture

DEFINITION

Poor Posture cause the loads on your spine to disperse incorrectly, weakening the tissues in your lower back. As a result, the intricate network of muscles, discs, and joints in your back tend to be pushed beyond their  limit, resulting in injurys that would not have otherwise occured.

CAUSE

Poor posture can be structural or functional. For most people their postural problems are functional and develop due to long periods spent slumping in bad seating, computer use, phone use, office work and other activities that force the body to remain in awkward positions for hours at a time.

Postural problems can result in a range of chronic problems developing including

  • Back, core & abdominal muscles becoming strained and painful, reducing their blood supply and causing weakness or stiffness in the lower back and trunk.
  • Overloading of the lumbar discs in the back, eventually causing herniation resulting in pain referring from the lumbar down the legs.
  • Reduced breathing capacity as prolonged hunching reduces lung volume creating shorter tighter breathing, which also causes greater levels of stress hormones
  • Nerve pain or “pins & needles” in the upper extremities due to compression and shortening of the shoulder and neck muscles, which places pressure on an array of nerves in this region that supply your upper limbs.

TREATMENT AND PREVENTION

“Stand up straight”, “Hold your shoulder back” is a common saying from most parents to children. Unfortunately, physically & mentally holding your posture in an upright state is an unnatural thing to achieve. Reversal of chronic poor posture takes time and effort, mainly due to the fact the primary factors involved in the poor posture are still occurring daily.
