DEFINITION

Swollen ankles or feet are a common condition where excess fluid is trapped in your body’s tissues. This causes swelling and puffiness of the tissue directly under your skin in your feet, ankles, and legs. Some people may also experience pitting edema, in which the skin retains a dimple after you press on it for several seconds.

CAUSE

Swollen ankles or feet can be a symptom of underlying issues such as kidney disease or heart failure, but more commonly are due to factors including sprain or strains, fluid retention from large salt intake, prolonged time on feet (standing or walking), menstruation, pregnancy, hot weather or medication side effects.

Some of these causes can be solved by lifestyle changes but many of them require more direct treatment. Balance arch supports are one such avenue that can be used to reduce swelling in the lower limbs. By aligning the body and reducing pressure on the veins and arteries in your limbs a more effective blood flow can resume and reduce the swelling in the local tissues.
